José Mujica of Uruguay features in the documentary “Human” about what he has learnt, what he thinks matters, and has discovered on his journey from farmer to president. His clip is one of many, and a lot of the other contributors are “more popular”, in terms of box office or brand recognition. However his gravitas comes through, due to the path he has followed, the choices he has made, and the deep logic of his reasoning. None of it is aimed at South Africa, but most of it can be applied here.
When I buy something, or you buy something, you’re not paying money for it. You’re paying with the hours of life you had to spend earning that money. The difference is that life is one thing that money can’t buy. Life only gets shorter. And it is pitiful to waste one’s life and freedom that way.
He discusses presidential jets, recommends we stop wasting resources on useless things or luxurious houses, spend on things that are really important for everyone, the real meaning of democracy that politicians have lost, governance, and much more.
It is a truly powerful message – watch it in wide screen format on YouTube!
